Academic Advising

dancer reading

As a dance major you have the benefit of being in a supportive and challenging environment. Academic Advising in the School of Dance is an integral part of the educational process and begins during your first week at Mason with the class First Year Seminar. There you will meet weekly with your advisor and be introduced to all the university resources available to you as a dance major. Individual advising meetings are easily scheduled and you will meet formally with your advisor each semester throughout your four years, to plan for registration, discuss your educational goals and review degree progress. Your dance advisor will help you balance your academic, social and work schedule with the demands of the major.

The location of the dance studios just across from faculty offices assures that you may see your advisor daily; in class, in rehearsals and in the hallway. In addition, the dance advisor collaborates with the dance faculty to individually mentor students and help them achieve their artistic goals, giving feedback, suggesting summer programs etc. The Administrative and Education Support Specialist and Program Coordinator are also available to help answer any questions about registration processes.

Four Year Plan

The School of Dance is an exciting and thought-provoking environment for creative and artistic growth. Daily classes in Modern and Ballet technique focus on developing sound anatomical principles and nuanced performance. Theory classes expand knowledge in the field, and the choreography series encourages ongoing creative research throughout your four years. Many majors enhance their study by taking advantage of the offerings in other academic areas to enrich their study of dance.

Performance

Performance opportunities abound, dance majors audition, rehearse and perform every semester in our vibrant concert series.

Choreography

BFA majors may choreograph every semester after completing the choreography series. Works will be presented in the Harris Theater (closed until 2022) or the Dance Performance Studio.
