Graduate Dance Application Process


Undergraduate Dance Audition Process

There are three steps to becoming a dance major at George Mason:

  1. Apply to the university.  Your application to the university must be on file prior to your audition.
    Early decision deadline – November 1
    Priority deadline for university scholarship consideration – November 1
    Undergraduate (freshman) deadline – January 15
    Transfer application deadline – April 1
     
  2. Schedule audition for the School of Dance.  Accepting audition request beginning June 15, 2013.  Choose from the following dates:

Saturday, October 19, 2013
Saturday, November 16, 2013
Saturday, January 18, 2014 in New York City
Saturday, February 1, 2014
Saturday, February 22, 2014 (transfer only)

 

Applicants will be mailed a letter to confirm the audition date.

Transfer students by special appointment only, please contact the School of Dance at 703-993-1114 prior to completing an application.

  1. Prepare a 2 minute video of a solo performance.
    The video, which is submitted at the time of audition, should show evidence of the candidate’s strong performance quality, musicality and technique.


The audition consists of a two hour technique class beginning with a ballet barre, followed by modern center work and repretoire.  Your audition is observed, recorded and evaluated by the dance faculty.  Please dress appropriately; wear leotards and tights that allow your alignment to be seen.  Wear ballet slippers for the barre, and have bare feet for the remainder of the class.

Applicants will be mailed audition results within two weeks following their audition.  Responses will be: accept; waitlist; or, deny.  Applicants may audition only once during an academic year.  The status of applicants placed on the program’s waitlist will be reviewed after February 1st.

To be considered for a 2013 Dance Talent Scholarship, apply by December 1 and audition October 19, November 16 or January 18.

Audition Day Schedule
12:30 p.m. Sign-in, welcome videos, conversations with majors and introduction to faculty.
1:00-3:00 p.m. Audition
Coffee and information session for parents with university financial aid and admissions representatives.
3:00-3:30 p.m. Refreshments for dancers
Question & Answer period for applicants and parents with the director.
3:30 p.m. Optional campus tour with dance majors.

 

Video Audition
Although we believe that applicants present themselves most effectively in person, applicants who live beyond a 500 mile radius of George Mason University may request a video audition.  Contact the School of Dance Office for further information about this option.
